The ceramic medium allows me to express ideas and feelings about the world around me. From my vantage point in rural New Hampshire, I am inspired by natural forms. It’s an incredible world of plants, woods, groundcover, water, and sometimes abundance. It’s impossible not to think about seeds, growth, pollen, and excess in the garden. Yet inspiration also comes from memories, nostalgia, and a longing for places that I’ve visited.
In my process, stoneware and porcelain are high fired with glaze in a carbonized atmosphere. I contrast a matte black glaze with a reflective glaze. I use an intuitive approach and quite often work quickly using fragments. After firing, grouping pieces together works well as the pieces bounce off each other.
